No longer Jesse’s girl

Poor Jesse! Here we thought the underdog had won the beauty, beating out Graham the model and Jeremy the attorney.
But Jesse Csincsak posted a video yesterday announcing that ABC’s Bachelorette DeAnna Pappas had dumped him. It’s been viewed hundreds of thousands of times — how awkward. And to make things worse, we’re going to point out a grammatical error the teary bloke made in his 1-minute video.
“I kind of feel like it’s our responsibility to tell you that we’re not together anymore,” the somber snowboarder said.
Here’s the deal. Like works when it links to a noun. DeAnna dropped Jesse like a bad habit. He cried like a baby. But when you’re linking to a verb, a conjunction is needed.
Jesse should’ve said, “I feel as though it’s our responsibility to tell you that we’re not together anymore.”
Failure to use a conjunction = a deal breaker. Sorry, Jesse!
Mandel’s mistake
Last night, for only the second time in the history of the American show, someone won a million dollars on Deal or No Deal. It was a bright spot for the show, but not so much for the grammatically-challenged host, Howie Mandel.
Toward the end of the show, Mandel explained to contestant Tomorrow Rodriguez that, despite the loss of one of four million-dollar cases in play, her deal was increasing “because you have less and less cases.”
Eek! We thought Canadians knew better.
When describing something that can be counted individually, such as the number of remaining cases, use fewer. If it cannot be counted, then use less.
Maybe if Mandel spent less time shaving his head, he could spend more time reading Grammar Guard and, consequently, he’d make fewer linguistic mistakes.
Dave’s advice to LC
Dave Letterman quizzed Lauren Conrad on her ex-boyfriend, Brody Jenner, the other night.
“What about that Brody guy. What’s his deal?” Letterman asked. “What does he do?”
Conrad struggled to answer. “Well, he…he…um…he’s very good looking.”
That’s when Letterman cut to the chase. “Let me just tell you something about Brody. If there was no television, this guy would be living in a tree.”
While we appreciate Letterman’s candor, his grammar is less laudable. When you’re describing a condition contrary to fact — such as the absence of television — you’re using the subjunctive mood, which requires the verb were, not was.
Perhaps The Hills, which is considered reality TV despite plenty of manufactured elements, has old-school Letterman a bit confused as to what’s true and what’s contrary to fact.
Here’s an example: If Jenner were to work a full-time job, he wouldn’t get such slack. If Jenner and Conrad were still dating, she would’ve come up with a more convincing defense.
Carefree kids?
Michelle Obama told Jay Leno last night that her daughters are blissfully unaffected by their dad’s high-profile presidential campaign. She said they “could care less. [When Barack comes home,] they’re like, ‘Let me show you my soccer trophy. I don’t really care what you do.’”
The problem with this linguistic error is that it inverts your meaning. If you could care less, that means you do care — at least a little. It is possible to care less.
If you didn’t care at all, not even one iota, then you couldn’t care less. You’re at rock bottom of interest.
Evidentally, Sasha and Malia are invested in their dad’s campaign — as they should be. Imagine the sweet sleepovers they could throw at the White House.
Baby Mama contracts Mommy Brain
Baby Mama is indeed a baby mama; Amy Poehler delivered her first child, 8-pound Archie, on Saturday.
In an interview with People, she said, “I’ve been very lucky. I’m just overwhelmed with blessings.”
To overwhelm means to turn over, to overcome by superior power. You can only overwhelm something if you’re beating it. It’s hard to imagine why someone would try to conquer blessings. “Life’s just been so easy and wonderful lately. I’m really trying to hang in there. I know I’ll make it through eventually. I can beat this euphoria!”
If you’re taken aback by an outpouring of blessings, you’re blown away or bowled over, surprised or stunned.
Dirty diapers, on the other hand, may overwhelm the Baby Mama.
