The brainy bachelorette
ABC’s latest Bachelorette, DeAnna Pappas, may have been prepared to put her heart on the line, but her grammar was no where near ready for national television. The 26-year-old real estate agent butchered the most basic building block of grammar, subject-verb agreement, with astounding frequency.
“There is a lot of people who are skeptical about the show,” DeAnna told KTLA in Los Angeles.
Yeah, you wonder why?
The Bachelorette’s feeble grasp of her native language became the most clear in a bloopers reel ABC ran at the end of the season. Then we understand why ABC was forced to tolerate the subject-verb issue; they had bigger fish to fry.
DeAnna begins with a note of confidence, saying, “The relationship that Jeremy and I have has continuously growd into someth — growd — growd.”
A producer stops her.
Take two.
“has continuously grew -”
“GROWN!” a producer shouts.
And then — brace yourself — the horrifying conclusion, DeAnna’s devastating response: “Whatever!”
Sadly, verb conjugation wasn’t the only linguistic error in that short sentence. That’s right, ABC didn’t choose just any woman to be its fearless bachelorette; no, they found a woman who can make not one but two rhetorical mistakes in the same sentence (and kiss two men on the same night.)
The second problem arose when she uncharacteristically busted out that five-syllable adjective, continuously. Continuous means uninterrupted or unbroken. Continual means steadily repeated. We all know the premise of the show means that DeAnna’s budding relationship with Jeremy was regularly interrupted by other suitors and dates.
But hey, whatever.
