Meghan’s first kiss
Meghan McCain gushes about the Ramones in a recent post. She writes:
I have been a fan since around sixth grade when I first heard the song “I Want To Be Sedated” on the radio and was immediately hooked (I even had my first kiss while “Beat on the Brat” was playing in the background). The power, impact and influence of possibly the greatest band of all time and the inventors of punk rock is absolutely endless and infinitely spanning.
Must’ve been an aggressive smooch, fueled by the repeated exhortation to “beat on the brat with a baseball bat.”
But grammatically, we disapprove. First off, she should’ve separated those two complete sentences (the one about being immediately hooked and the second about her first kiss) with a period or a semicolon. Second, there’s that statement about the band’s “power, impact and influence.” Those are three different subjects, which call for a plural verb, are.
We also take issue with Meghan’s word choice. Endless is an absolute. It does not need to be modified with the adjective absolutely. As to infinitely spanning, it should be banned on the grounds of being an awful, goofy phrase.
