Here’s our ranking of grammatical errors, from most glaring (No. 1) to most subtle (No. 6)

1. Cindy McCain - subject-verb disagreement

Said: “A helping hand and friendly support has always been our way.”

Should’ve said: “A helping hand and friendly support have always been our way.”

2. Joe Biden - noun-pronoun disagreement

Said: “We were told that anyone can make it if they try.”

Should’ve said: “We were told that anyone can make it if she tries.”

3. Barack Obama - who vs. whom

Said: “I remember all those men and women on the South Side of Chicago who I stood by and fought for…”

Should’ve said: “I remember all those men and women on the South Side of Chicago whom I stood by and fought for…”

4. Michelle Obama - like vs. as

Said: “[Barack] was raised…by a single mother who struggled to pay the bills just like we did.”

Should’ve said: “[Barack] was raised…by a single mother who struggled to pay the bills just as we did.”

5. Sarah Palin - unclear syntax

Said: “We tend to prefer candidates who don’t talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco.”

Should’ve said: “We tend to dislike candidates who talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco.”

6. John McCain - as…as vs. so…as

Said: “I’d been mistreated before, but not as badly as others.”

Should’ve said: “I’d been mistreated before, but not so badly as others.”
