Taylor Swift is thrilled about the diploma that arrived in the mail.
“Graduating high school is really, really cool,” she told People. “I’m so proud of it because I stopped going to high school in 10th grade, but I started home-schooling. It’s really good to know you don’t have to give up on your dreams to graduate high school, and you don’t have to quit your education to live your dreams.”
This statement is troubling on a number of levels, but let’s focus on the word usage. To graduate means to confer a degree upon or to arrange into grades. A teen graduates from high school; he does not graduate it. The school is already divided into grades.
This is a rare case where an institution can perform an act that a person cannot. Valley High School can graduate 250 students, but those students cannot graduate Valley High School.
No wonder Taylor Swift sounds so surprised to have graduated; those two years of home-schooling don’t appear to have been very fruitful.
